What is a Consulting Therapist?
Consulting Therapists apply therapeutic principles to business, organizational and group settings. These settings may include schools, volunteer organizations, social service agencies, civic and professional organizations, religious groups, corporate entities, and academic schools and departments. They may also consult and offer case consultation with therapists on issues within their specific expertise.
As a Consulting Therapist, I offer my expertise in clinical and organizational psychology to address human behavior issues through the process of consultation. The consultative services I provide may be delivered at the individual, group or organizational level, and are provided in an advisory capacity only. In this consulting capacity, I would offer suggestions for improved performance, or goal identification and action planning. I would not engage in traditional therapy.

What Does a Consulting Therapist Do?
For example, I might help facilitate strategic planning with a company, organization, academic or professional organization. Leading individuals in that setting to identify organizational goals and devise an action plan to achieve those goals.
I might work as a consultant on a clinical team or athletic department on eating disorders and wellness issues, which is a clinical specialization of mine.
A large part of my job as a Consulting Therapist is to conduct research. I can work with managers and executives to address a presenting problem in their organization by interviewing employees to determine the underlying cause of the problem and offer suggestions as to how to address the issue. An example might be interviewing workers and discovering that they are unresponsive because they are intimidated by a manager’s style. In this case I can identify the issues and suggest ways in which the manager can improve a managerial style by improving their interpersonal communication skills.
I might participate in the hiring process of a company to offer insights on the potential of prospective employees to contribute to the mission of the company. Conducting educational programs and training exercises aimed at resolving issues in the workplace are also part of what I can offer as a consulting therapist. These programs range from multicultural sensitivity training to sexual harassment education to stress-reduction and performance enhancing exercises.
Our Capabilities
I would define three areas of focus that I can be helpful in with regard to organizational consulting:
1- Personnel Coaching;
2- Team Training and Programing; and,
3-Administrative Strategic Planning.
Personnel Coaching
In every organization there are individuals who, for a variety of reasons, both personal and professional, can benefit from short term, focused counseling . The following are just some of the issues that we might focus on:
a- Relationship and team building;
b- Communication skills;
c- Anger management;
d- Giving and receiving evaluative feedback;
e- Self-evaluation and goal setting.
Team Training and Programing
An important part of all organizational development and learning comes from team training and programing. The following are some suggested team building and programming areas we can provide:
a- Team Building – building inter-team trust and understanding;
b- Organizational Learning – identifying new learning as a team rather than as individuals;
c- Identification and implementation of team goals;
d- Assessment of team capabilities – supporting abilities and addressing challenges.
Administrative Strategic Planning
The development of a strong strategic plan is essential to the success of any organization. Strategic planning is a process. It is most effective when it follows as series of steps. These are the steps we can assist with:
a- Forming the Strategic Planning Team – The identification and formation of a diverse group of individuals who are key to the functioning of the organization;
b- Developing a clear, concise, focused and accepted mission statement;
c- Capturing ALL creative and emerging ideas related to moving the organizational mission forward;
d- Identifying and grouping of ideas into focal points;
e- Creating clear implementation steps to move focal points forward.
We are committed to assisting your organization in any or all of these areas and in helping you to assess which of these areas would be most beneficial to the growth and success of your organization.
Sincerely,
Dr. Patricia De Barbieri, LPC
