Living in an Old Italian village like San Lorenzo can offer some very interesting apartment designs. Rather than taking down buildings to build new structures, existing structures are slightly renovated to create an apartment with all of the necessary living space that a family would need. The results are charming and unusual living spaces like the one we currently inhabit.

We live in a very old building in the ‘old city’ of San Lorenzo. I will tell you more about the city proper at another time. Our building has one apartment on two levels. The first floor is one level above the street. Our entry is a hallway with 20 beautiful green marble stairs leading straight up to the living area (see photo).

We have a full kitchen (see photo) with a clothes washing machine (which is a very welcome addition to any apartment in Italy)

In addition there is a full bathroom, and living / dining room (see photo) on the first level.

All of the floors are beautiful beige or green marble. Every room has wonderful big windows creating lots of light. You can get a partial view of the Mediterranean Sea from our first floor sitting room windows as well as from one of our bedroom windows (see photo).

A stairway, equal to that at the entry, takes us up to our second floor sleeping area. On this floor there are two bedrooms and a half bath. Our bedroom is quite large with a huge wardrobe and marble topped dresser (see photos). Our bedroom also has a small terrace with a view of the sea. Again the rooms are bright and the whole apartment, though old, is very clean and well kept. The furnishings are sturdy antique wooded structures and except for the couches, which we think ought to be replaced, the whole apartment is quite comfortable and adequate for our needs.

We are quite sure that we are getting plenty of daily exercise between the apartment stairs and our walks to local stores and restaurants. We rarely drive during the week except for my trip to school each day and perhaps some local touring of the area. This is a big cycling community and folks, young and old, can be seen daily, cycling the hills and along the seaside bike paths. It is spring here. The weather is generally in the mid to upper 60’s Fahrenheit daytime and high 40’s to 50’s at night. It is a perfect climate for walking, cycling and many outdoor activities.

Ciao for now! More to come…….Patti
